Behind the Visor: Race report from AMA Vintage Days
July 28, 2016
Nothing is quite like driving your van into a race weekend that has over sixty thousand adrenaline junkies in attendance. Pulling into Mid Ohio Raceway was a surreal sight as thousands of tents, trailers, campers, and motorcycles lined both sides of the entrance way as far as the eye could see. This was the beginning of the AMA Vintage Days Festival, one of the largest motorcycle events of the country.
Friday kicked off with practice for all the racers, many of which have never raced on the northern course. Compared to the track's back down in the south, it was a crazy learning experience. The Mid Ohio track was coated in some sort of sealant that is put down for the car guys who usually run there. This sealant was like riding on ice until the track warmed up which made for a few extremely interesting sight laps. After the first couple of practice sessions I found myself wondering why on earth I drove twelve hours to ride on an ice skating rink type surface. This went on
for several more sessions and we ended up completing the day with no crashes.
Saturday and Sunday were both WERA National Sprint days, and unfortunately I was unable to figure out the course in time. Finished the weekend with a pair of 16th place finishes, a 15th place finish, and a 13th place finish.
The highlight of the weekend would have to be the fact that my friend Gary Virgin, with Evansville Super Bike shop (http://www.esuperbike.com/) lent me his son's Arai and a pair of gloves since I left mine in Georgia, and watching the side car racing. Without Gary I would have been unable to ride Friday and Saturday while I waited to have my helmet shipped to me. The sidecar guys were absolutely nuts and extremely fun to watch. Nothing quite like seeing a vintage motorcycle flying around on three wheels!
