Thanks to my good friend Ed Eberhart, with www.eberhartcreative.com, I was able to attend the 2016 WERA Season Opener at Talladega Gran Prix on his "Godzirra" Ninja 250. After being off of a sportbike since the Jennings GP 250 Endurance in early November, the cobwebs covering my helmet needed a good dusting off.
On Saturday I signed up for the FSS Expert Class, ESS Expert Class, and Formula 3 class. While only able to bring home one participation trophy out of the three classes, it felt freakin' amazing to be back on track and putting in some hard laps. The highlight of the day was watching my new friend Jason McCray pass the WERA Rider's School with flying colors on the same bike I was running (And thank baby Jesus he kept the bike on two wheels so I could compete in my races.)
Sunday started with rain hitting the roof of my car/one-man-hotel and I heavily considered skipping the day's races due to not wanting to crash the Eberhart Creative sponsored bike. After a little bit of debating I decided to pony up and sign up for the Formula 3 class. Unfortunately I skipped practice since I was again sharing a ride with Jason, so going into the race I had zero tracktime for the day.
Formula 3 ended up being an absolute blast of a race, as Nathan Simmons as we constantly traded position (and even got close to sharing a little paint) as we blitzed around the track. After a couple of aggressive passes between the two of us, Nathan held the advantage on the final lap heading into the final corner. Instead of attempting a banzai pass into the final turn, I set Nathan up for a finish line draft and charged as hard as I could. Staying in his draft the Eberhart Creative 250 was able to quickly pull him in, but even breaking out of the draft at the last possible moment to swing around for a pass I was unable to make the pass. 2nd place was mine - four inches and 0.029 seconds (That's 1/3rd of a second!) away from a first place finish. While losing is never an easy thing to swallow, it's a lot easier knowing you battled your heart out and lost to a great guy.
I am also extremely happy to announce that I discovered I secured a 2015 WERA Regional Championship for the Formula 3 class, in the Mid-Central region. Can't express my gratitude for those who have supported and continue to support my racing endeavors. Without such awesome folks supporting me I wouldn't be able to chase after championships and dreams. Thank you all!
A special thanks to Eberhart Creative, Proline Motorsports, Amsoil Synthetics, Pure Attitude Wraps & Designs, Hawk Security, and all my friends and family!
