Friday started off fairly well as I attempted to get back up to speed. Having not been at Road Atlanta for over a year I was pretty rusty and it definitely showed in my practice times. Having only one race for the day I went out for both practices before waiting for the start of the V5 sprint race. Once the green flag dropped I had a fairly decent start against the larger displacement bikes and settled into a fourth or fifth place spot as the pack charged down turns three and four at Road Atlanta. As I rounded turn five and began charging up the hill I found myself sliding across the asphalt on my ass as the bike slid away from me. The crash wasn't too bad, just a bit of sliding followed by some tumbling as I hit the curbing and gravel trap. Fortunately I walked away with no injuries, and headed back to the pits to start working on the bike in preparation for the rest of the weekend's racing.
Saturday started off slowly in the pits, as I was still walking off the soreness from the previous day's face plant. I was extremely off-pace in practice, and could really tell that I wasn't as limber as I normally was. In my first two races of the day (Clubman Expert and ESS Expert) I tried to tuck in behind faster riders and hold my pace in the attempt to get back to my “race” pace. While I did not podium in either class, I could tell I was getting back in my groove. In the final race of the day (FSS Expert) I was fortunate enough to catch up to my good friend Kurt Kesler (#334 Expert). Following Kurt, I picked up almost two seconds from my previous races and finished third in class.
On Sunday, I signed up for a national class that I was hopelessly down on skill and power in to gain more seat time at the track. I used the longer race to focus on trying different lines, while also hitting several different brake markers. While I wasn't very fast, I kept all lap times within half a second of each other.
As always thanks to my friends, family, and sponsors for their support. I couldn't do it without the help of Proline Motorsports, Amsoil Synthetics, Pure Attitude Wraps, MX4Nam Photography, Hawk Security, Lee's Collision, and my kick ass crew!
