Sam Burke's Race Report at MGKT - December 1st, 2013
December 2, 2013
I started out the weekend at my friend Gary’s house to work on my carburetor. I’ve had all kinds of issues with it in past races & never could get the bike running right. Gary couldn’t race this weekend so he ended up loaning me his carb jets & got my bike running great for me.
After a solid night of sleep in the back of my Forester on Friday, I was ready to get in some practice before the endurance race. Unfortunately, what turned out to be bad gas kept me off the track for most of practice. I was still able to get in some solid laps to refresh my muscle memory, & was feeling pretty good when it came time for the endurance race.
Goon Squad founder James East & I teamed up for the race & managed a solid 40-45 minutes each & one hard lowside on his part, only to find out the score had been lost & the race was called. I was pretty bummed but I tried to turn that disappointment into motivation to push extra hard Sunday.
By Sunday morning I was feeling confident for the beginner’s class. It was my third time racing & the grid was pretty small, but the beginner’s class still had most of the same people I’d been beaten by at the last two races. A few more experienced racers had been giving me some good pointers as they watched me ride on Saturday, & that definitely helped a lot, because I ended up taking 2nd place in the heat & the main event.
It was a really good weekend of racing, & I’m looking forward to bumping up to the advanced class at the next race & trying to keep up with the fast guys. Trophies are fun, but the greatest part is just seeing how far you can push yourself.
